Shake it Up, Baby: DIY Ice Cream in a Mason Jar

Looking for a super cool summer party idea? How about make-your-own-ice-cream? Our recipe makes it easy and fun, and your creative ideas make it all the more scrumptious. All you need is a jar and a spoon for each person, four basic ingredients, a freezer, and a little bit of muscle power.

First, line up the jars.

We like 8-ounce Mason jars—perfect for the basic recipe, while leaving room for you to use your creativity and add in your favorite ingredients. Plus, they look so cute, guests can eat their creations straight from the jar.

Next, the ingredients.

You’ll need a half-cup of heavy cream for each person, plus a tablespoon of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Then, feel free to use your imagination and add extra ingredients in—think sprinkles, cookie bits, mini chocolate chips, chocolate syrup, dulce de leche, peanut butter cups, fresh fruit—the possibilities are endless. Put each mix-in ingredient in a container with its own spoon and encourage people to get creative. Supply stickers or labels so guests can keep track of their jars.

Now let’s get shaking.

Close the jar tightly and shake it for 3-5 minutes. And why not put on some fun music and bust out some dance moves at the same time? Then place the jar in the freezer for 2-3 hours, the perfect amount of time to serve lunch or BBQ up some dinner, play a game, or watch a movie, but set reminders to stop and shake the jars every 30 minutes. When the consistency is something like soft serve, it’s ice cream time!
