For three generations, the Olsen family has been farming salmon on Kvarøy Island (pronounced “Kwa-ray”) off the coast of Norway. From firm, flavorful salmon fillets to fun salmon hot dogs, the Olsens and their team are committed to bringing you delicious, sustainable foods that support the health of people and the planet. Kvarøy’s production process enables a lower carbon footprint than even organic salmon.
For over forty years, Kvarøy has raised salmon from egg to harvest in the most natural way possible to provide the salmon with the highest quality, healthiest looking, freshest tasting salmon. With their innovative practices, they’re out to transform the salmon farming industry, protect the seas, and bring the great taste and the many health benefits of salmon to the world.
Hormones? Chemicals? Artificial color? Never.
With fjords that are 120 meters deep and have a consistently strong current, Kvarøy’s farms have clear, clean water and active, healthy salmon, so there is no need to treat the areas with any chemicals. Instead of antibiotics or chemicals, Kvarøy uses The Stingray laser to zap sea lice away without harming the fish. This results in zero impact on them and the ecosystem.
Certified Sustainable. Kvarøy has earned Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification on all of their sites, and Eco-standard recommendation from Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch. They worked to develop the Whole Foods Certification Standard for salmon and are Whole Foods Certified, and certified by Global G.A.P.
They protect the surrounding waters by letting their pens lie fallow 3 times longer than required—farming for 16 months and then leaving the water undisturbed for 6 to 8 months, to keep the area as clean as possible.
Feeding that nourishes the environment. Instead of dragging large nets across the ocean for small feeder fish, Kvarøy feeds its fish a GMO-free diet made with trimmings from sustainable, A-rated Marine Stewardship Council Certified fisheries. Every ingredient is traceable.
Good for you: Just one 3.5-ounce serving of Kvarøy Arctic salmon has over 2000mg of omega-3s—the highest amount of long-chain marine omega-3s per serving for any farm raised salmon
Water covers more than half of our planet, so we applaud companies like Kvarøy, who go far above and beyond what’s legally required in taking care of this great resource. Try their salmon in your favorite recipes and let us know what you think.
