Brighten Up

Beat the Winter Blues

It’s been a long winter, and we’re all just about ready for spring to…well, spring. So, we’ve brainstormed some great ways to get through the late winter slump. Here are a few of our fav ideas.

Give springtime an early admission.

Nature may be keeping it gray outside, but your living space is yours to brighten up any time. Check out our gorgeous selection of flowers, and infuse your place with all the life and color you like…at least until the world outside is ready to follow your lead. (We think the tulips and daffodils are especially happy-making.)

Shift your mood with vitamins & food.

It’s the shortest month of the year, but gloomy February sometimes feels like it will never end. Seasonal Mood Disorder is real, and our physical, mental, and emotional health are all pieces of the mood puzzle. Give your mental state a head start with top-quality vitamins and supplements, like collagen powder, known for promoting joint health and radiant skin (yes, even in the winter.) Swirl it into your coffee or smoothie and get your glow going without even tasting a difference.

Citrus, anyone?

A nice big dose of vitamin C gives your immune system the support it needs around this time of year. Plus, the bright, zesty taste of citrus starts any morning off right. Head to our produce department and choose your favorites from our selection of oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and so many more.

Pick plants.

Superfood isn’t all just celery juice and leafy greens. All kinds of nutritious veggies, protein-packed entrees, and heaps of healthy fats fall into the category. Our Power Plants Recipe Collection is filled with recipes for plant-based comfort foods that won’t leave you feeling heavy and uncomfortable. Try our Baked Pasta with Veg or Thai Tempeh Cakes with Sweet Chili Sauce for uplifting, energetic flavors to liven up your dinner plate. Want something a little more toothsome? Go for our Mussels in Spicy Paprika Cream Sauce for a seafood fix with a bit of a kick.

Mardi Gras: rev up your cooking with roux.

Fat Tuesday is coming up, and that inspires us to bring a little Southern comfort and revelry into our homes (especially into our kitchens.) Get ready for the main event with some roux-based, Louisiana-inspired recipes like our jaw-dropping Cajun Sausage Stew. Serve it with Our Own Andouille Sausage, and you’ll have a combo so good, those already-dropped jaws might just plummet to the floor. Need a little roux tutorial? Just preheat your oven to 350°, whisk equal parts canola oil and all-purpose flour together in an oven roaster or heavy pot, then bake for two hours or until it’s a nice, deep, caramel-brown color. Within a couple of hours, you’ll have a beautiful base for sauces, soups, gravies, and stews.

Let there bee light.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that best brighten up our hearts and homes. Beeswax candles can help you get your "hygge" on while there’s still a chill. They have the highest melting point of any other wax, so they burn longer than other candles. Plus, they drip less, they don’t release any messy soot, and the ambient light they emit is extra bright—for a cozy winter night in.
