How to Make Puff Pastry Boxes

Makes 2 large or 4 small boxes

  • 8 ounces puff pastry, cold, but thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 425°F. Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
Roll out puff pastry to half thickness or less than how it came out of box. Work quickly to keep dough cool.
Cut into desired shape (hearts, squares, stars, circles, etc), 4 (3x3-inch) shapes for small boxes or 2 (5x5-inch) shapes for large boxes.
Gently place on baking sheet.
Using a small, sharp knife, score an inner shape, 1/2 inch from outside edge, cutting only halfway through dough (if you make squares, cut a square 1/2 inch from outside edge, creating a new square).
Using tip of knife, score inside part of design with lines, but only cut halfway through dough.
Brush gently with beaten egg.
Sprinkle with sugar, cocoa, Parmesan cheese, herbs or seasonings at this point, depending on chosen filling.
Chill for 20 minutes before baking.
Bake for 10-15 minutes (depending on size), until golden and puffed.
Cool to room temperature.
Using tip of knife, gently remove top few layers of inner design to create box and lid.
These edible boxes are a great way to turn an ordinary night into a special occasion! The filling can be savory or sweet, such as sautéed chicken and vegetables in a thickened cream sauce, ratatouille, pie filling or vanilla custard with fresh berries. Be creative!
