Grilled Onions

Serves 4


  • 4 medium sweet, yellow or red onions, peeled
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil of your choice
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Cut onions crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices.  Place the balsamic vinegar and soy sauce in a small bowl and whisk until combined. Brush with cooking oil and then the balsamic-soy sauce mixture, using all of the mixture.  Season onion slices to taste with salt and pepper.
Brush grill with oil before heating to prevent sticking. Place on preheated grill, covered with a foil pan or foil tent about 15-20 minutes until tender, flipping once halfway through (covering with foil helps them cook more evenly).

To broil rather than grill, heat broiler to high and place an oven rack in the upper third of the oven.  Broil for 15-20 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
