Hungry for Summer!
Celebrating the
Season’s Best Foods

Welcome to our new blog Food People Love!

hungry-for-summerWe’re excited to talk with you about our favorite foods and provide some inspiration before you head to the market. We’re especially thrilled its debut coincides with our Hungry for Summer celebration. Delicious summer inspirations abound – from local produce to grilling ideas!

Local berries from Sterino Farms in Puyallup are peaking right now. Our produce guru Joe Pulicicchio has been working with Jake Sterino for years to get the most unique variety of berries you’re likely to find outside of a farmers’ market. Blackberries, red and golden raspberries, currants and more are harvested each morning and delivered directly to our markets. We’re also getting organic raspberries each morning from Hayton Farms in Skagit Valley. What to do with all these sweet little gems? Try our recipe for Savory Berry Sauce to top grilled meats, or use any combination of berries and fruit to make Summer Fruit Crisp. I made this last week with tayberries and peaches to share with my coworkers – it wasn’t around for long!

Glenn Stonebarger of G&S Farms, left, and an unidentified person in the corn fields in Brentwood, Calif.

Sweet bicolor, yellow and white corn from G&S Farms in Brentwood, Calif., is at its best this month. This is no run-of-the-mill corn on the cob. Glenn Stonebarger grows the most tender, sweet and plump varieties available. They’re harvested by hand to eliminate bruising, and only one ear per stalk is picked – the one with the biggest and best kernels. Then the ears are immediately iced to ensure they’re perfect when they arrive in our markets shortly after. Feel free to shuck your corn right in our Produce Market and we’ll be sure those husks get composted. Then swing by the Deli for Cajun or Garlic Herb Finishing Butters to slather your corn with big flavor.

Ranger free-range, air-chilled whole chickens from Draper Valley are on our Big Board Buys this week for $1.48 lb. – an awesome deal! These Northwest birds never receive antibiotics, are Non-GMO Project verified and salmon safe. Pick one up for the grill and a couple more for your freezer. Our butchers will gladly split, cut or spatchcock them for you (to spatchcock is to split open a whole chicken for the grill). For a tasty take on grilled chicken, try Five-Spice Beer-Can Chicken this weekend. For a more traditional barbecue, rub it with Our Own Smoky Spice Rub, available in Bulk Foods.

Thanks for dropping by Food People Love! We’ll be back next Wednesday with more inspirations and stories. Subscribe to receive the blog via email, and we’ll talk with you soon!

Put some cheese on your grill! Carr Valley Bread Cheese is designed to be enjoyed warm, but it won’t melt. Grill, bake or pan-fry to get an irresistible crispy crust and warm, luscious interior. Try it dipped in Woodinville Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup and you’ll thank us later – and see why we chose it as July’s “Cheese of Choice.”
