Happy Dad’s Day to all my fellow fathers out there. I hope you’re planning to find some time to relax and reflect on the joys and challenges of shepherding a young one into this world. I plan on doing my reflecting while dipping my toes in the cool waters of the Greider Lakes north of Gold Bar, Wash., this weekend. That’s my gift to myself.
Lots of dudes enjoy a big juicy steak, a new power tool, or a shiny new driver for the golf course on Father’s Day. But if you’re looking for something a little different for the food-lover in your life, I have a few suggestions.
If his grilling game is getting stale, Son of a Gun Seasonings from Spice Hut in Bellingham are a really tasty line of barbecue dry rubs with a fun, “wild West” theme. If he likes it spicy, their “Snake Bite” rub promises “hotter’n hell” flames to go along with bold, zesty flavor. And the “Tennessee Whiskey” variety delivers flavors of brown sugar, rosemary, paprika and more along with rich and oaky whiskey. These Washington-made rubs are a fun way to shake up the grilling routine.
Speaking of whiskey … if there’s one thing I enjoy as much as summer camping under the stars, it’s a warm and toasty glass of rye whiskey with it. That’s why I was super excited to taste our new Tennessee Whiskey BellaVitano cheese by Sartori. I don’t want to steal too much thunder from this month’s Cheese Corner (see below) but this whiskey-soaked cheese is no gimmick. Even non-whiskey drinkers will appreciate its unique flavor and slightly sweet overtones.
Nothing looks and smells quite as delicious as a big steak sizzling on the grill, but there are other fish in the sea, so to speak. Our Own Crab Cakes and Salmon Burgers from our Seafood Markets are packed with high-quality ingredients, including fresh salmon and crab, and definitely deliver on flavor. They cook up in a snap, too. Throw in a lightly-grilled brioche bun, a slice of ripe, red tomato, a dollop of mayo, and a tiny dab of wasabi for a special Father’s Day treat.
Last, but certainly not least, if your man isn’t the biggest meat fan and prefers more vegetarian fare, then give him a veggie burger or brat from our Beyond Meat line. This line of soy- and gluten-free “meat” is really blowing up right now, in part, because they’re packed with protein and look and taste a lot like real burgers and bratwurst. Even Burger King has begun to offer a meatless burger!
You can find Beyond Meat products in our frozen aisle – and you can trust that these burgers are NOT the stale, hockey puck-like veggie burgers you may have tried before. They’re the closest to the real thing I’ve ever tasted.
Whatever you and the family get up to this weekend, I hope it’s fun and filled with food you love. Happy Father’s Day!
Hayton Farm Strawberries are Here
Some of my earliest memories are of picking tiny, sweet strawberries from just a few strawberry bushes in my mother’s little garden in Montana. We’d get only four or five handfuls every year, so every time you pulled a little berry from beneath a green leaf, it was a treat to be savored.
My mom lives far away now and I no longer have the time — or the soil — to grow those strawberries. That’s why I’m so grateful for the chance to experience fresh-picked strawberries that remind me of those days. And the berries are from family outfit in Skagit County to boot! Their berries are picked and available in our markets within hours.
Here’s the sad news. They’ll only be around for about 10 days, give or take, and then they’re gone for another year. I know we hear this all time, but, seriously, get ‘em while you can because their season is sweet, but short.
The Hayton family has been farming and raising animals on Mount Vernon’s Fir Island since 1876! Now they specialize in organic obsidian raspberries, organic blueberries and much more.
They’re a great family farm to support.
Read more about their history and our partnership here.
I can’t decide if I appreciate their strawberries more just eaten right out of the flat, or as part of a Cannoli Parfait … or in a in a Fresh Berry Trifle … or how about Fresh Fruit Clafouti? Ok, stop!
Our very own cheese whiz, Shauna Howell, offers up a cheese worth discovering.
Sartori’s Tennessee Whiskey BellaVitano: I love Sartori BellaVitano in one form or another. It’s on just about every cheese plate of mine because it’s a real crowd pleaser.
This newest BellaVitano is a real home run as far as I’m concerned because they’ve soaked it in one of my other favorite things: Tennessee whiskey. And when I say soaked, I mean really drenched. Give it a whiff when you unwrap it — whiskey heaven right there.
Whether you’re a whiskey lover or an abstainer, when you pair this creamy hard cheese with a syrupy Amarena cherry from our Deli. about all you’ll be able to utter is “Where have you been all my life?” It’s easily one of my favorite pairing possibilities of all the thousands in our cheese case. It’s our Cheese of Choice all month so pick some up at a great price and see for yourself.
