Classic French Toast

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 8 thick slices day-old bread
  • Unsalted butter

Directions

In a wide-bottomed bowl or baking dish, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla and cinnamon.
Heat a large, nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat and melt about a tablespoon of butter.
Dip each slice of bread into batter for about 5 seconds.
Place in frying pan in a single layer, so edges do not touch.
Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned and cooked through.
Transfer to a warm oven to hold and wipe pan.
Add more butter and repeat with remaining slices.
Serve hot topped with maple syrup, fruit compote or your favorite topping!

For a rich holiday treat, replace some or all of the milk with eggnog.
