Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries (or your favorite berries)
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup (loosely packed) brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut in small cubes
  • Pinch salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°F.
Butter a 9x9-inch baking dish. In mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt and nutmeg. Set aside. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy with hand mixer or stand mixer with paddle attachment. Add egg, beat until combined. Add flour and milk, alternating so you begin and end with flour (flour, milk, flour, milk, flour), beating between each addition until just combined. Gently fold in berries and pour into baking dish. Spread batter to edges. To make topping, combine all ingredients in a bowl or food processor and cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over top of cake. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack before serving.
